State and National Test Information

ri-Community prepares students for both State and National certification testing. Below is a brief overview of each testing pathway, including important information to help you understand the requirements and expectations for both State and National exams.

Candidates are required to hold a California Court Reporters Board CSR license in order to work in the industry in California. There are two primary pathways to qualify for the California CSR exam.

The first pathway is to successfully complete the entire program at Tri-Community, which makes you eligible to sit for the CSR examination. The California CSR exam is offered three times per year.

The second—and most popular—pathway is to successfully complete the entire program at Tri-Community and then take the national exam offered by NVRA (National Verbatim Reporters Association).  The test is the CVR exam which is offered in California six times per year and up to twelve times annually if you are willing to travel out of state, which many students choose to do. Students who pursue the national certification often reach eligibility for the California CSR exam more quickly.
